Buy Used Prius Battery

As with all Toyota Prii, towing with the 2000-2003 Prius is not officially sanctioned by Toyota and may -- in certain circumstances -- affect any warranty claims if (and only if) it can be proven that the tow-bar caused the fault which is being claimed for under warranty.

As with the original Prius, the electrically-assisted power steering in the 2004-2009 Prius is extremely light. Designed for the Japanese domestic market -- where steering is generally much lighter -- it may take a while to get used to the rather sensitive steering.

The most current Prius gives the best performance and driving experience, but given you can choose from among five model years, our pick for best used Prius value has to be the second generation (2004-2009).

Prices on used EV have fallen dramatically, and the Tesla Model 3 leads the way. Aptera is the first to use open-source-based Openpilot for driver-assist tech. LG plans a mammoth Arizona plant. And Hyundai previewed the new look of the 2024 Sonata Hybrid. Hyundai has revealed the design of the 2024...

The Toyota Prius is an electric hybrid manufactured by Toyota since 1997. Electric hybrids run off battery power, so if you want to keep your vehicle running, youll have to make sure that the batteries are in good shape. You can find hybrid batteries for the Prius on eBay.

A hybrid vehicle uses more than one type of power. The Prius, for example, uses a hybrid battery and gas to increase miles per gallon and make the car more fuel-efficient. The science behind these vehicles operates on the theory that different motors work more efficiently at different speeds. Electric motors are good at producing torque, or turning power, while combustion engines are known for their ability to maintain high speeds. Transferring from one type of power to the other at specific times leads to a more efficient use of fuel.

The Prius recharges during normal driving, eliminating the need to plug it in. A charge-sustaining model, the car keeps the power-pack topped using power recovered during braking and coasting or power from the gasoline engine. The vehicles low carbon emissions make it environmentally friendly. This is done by a charging system that lets the battery tap into the gasoline engine while using kinetic energy from the brake system to create electrical power. This is known as regenerative braking.

In 2012, Toyota introduced a plug-in Prius. The plug-in kept the original setup with gasoline and battery, but it added the capability to charge from a standard 120-volt outlet with a 15-amp circuit. The Prius plug-in needs three hours for a complete charge. The charge provides enough energy to drive up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 miles per hour. When the charge runs out, the car automatically switches back to the original battery pack.

When it comes to used Prius cars, third-generation models (2010-2015) are the most popular on the market. For one, the mileage is amazing (Gen 3 Prius cars will give you at least 45 mpg in real-world use), not to mention that it offers a lot in terms of interior and storage space.

Toyota's Prius is known to go well past 250,000 miles without battery issues. If you own a Toyota Prius Hybrid you may find that at some point well into its natural life the battery needs a little bit of TLC. If your car is under the hybrid warranty, the place to go is your local Toyota dealer. They will correct the problem and have you back on the road quickly and at no cost to you. However, if your Prius hybrid has a battery issue and it is past its warranty, you don't want to head to the dealer. Rather, you need to more cost-effectively deal with the issue. Toyota's solution is to replace the battery at a very high cost. However, in many or most cases, the battery is repairable, and at a very affordable price. Single hundreds of dollars rather than multiple thousands of dollars.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Battery FailureIf your Prius is giving you a warning that the hybrid battery has failed, you may panic and assume the cost will be more than the value of the car, or that it may be a cost so high you cannot afford to deal with it. This is usually not the case. Also, the car is drivable in most cases. We can't comment on whether the vehicle is safe to drive long distances, or exactly how much performance will be degraded, but you can certainly get home. How do we know? We spoke to a ride-share driver with over 1 million miles logged in multiple 250K+ mile hybrids. He told us that he has driven Prius cars with failed batteries on numerous occasions.

Toyota Prius Battery Failure - What HappensInside a hybrid battery from Toyota, there are many individual battery cells all working along together happily. When they fail, it is typically because one or more cells are no longer able to sustain the power that they are required to. In other words, they fail. The good news is that they can be replaced. The bad news is that this is not a job that can be done by every owner. Many owners who are comfortable with electronics and basic car repair do fix the battery themselves with Prius hybrid battery cells they buy online. The cells are usually under $50 each. There are endless Youtube videos from these folks that show you what they did and how you can also repair your Prius Hybrid battery.

Instead, we suggest owners try the Prius Owners Group on Facebook. The group has multiple members who have had batteries repaired and there may be one in your area. Like Len Maka's shop in Orange County, California. Or Pleasant Street Auto in Norwood Mass. You can check their Google reviews and maybe ask a FB club member how they made out with the repair on their Prius Hybrid Battery. Another option is to buy a reconditioned battery. For more on that topic, please see our prior story.

Cost. Hybrid owners want to have an affordable option when replacing the battery. Most owners do not want to pay dealership prices at over $3000. The dealer batteries are new and not refurbished, making them one of the better options, but the cost drives most people away.

The most popular option for Prius replacement packs is the refurbished route. Packs that have gone through proper refurbishing can act as a new battery but for a fraction of the cost. The cost, above all, is usually the determining factor in the decision.

One More Outlet To Choose FromSo far, I have seen refurbished packs go for upwards of $2000. While I was searching the internet, I came across another place, Carparts.com. They offer refurbished battery packs for Prius and other hybrids for a lot less, and their warranty is pretty on par.

For example, a 2010 Toyota Prius battery from Carparts.com is $1,364.99 with an 18-month unlimited mileage warranty. That is pretty darn good if you ask me. I know there are other companies out there offering a "lifetime" warranty, but the thing is, you will have to use that more often than you would like.

I purchased the Gen 2 Prius Hybrid Battery on February 22, 2013 for a 2006 Toyota Prius. They were knowledgeable and honest throughout the entire experience. The Battery arrived when the said it would. It was shipped in a crate which protected the key areas from damage. The return shipping label was included and the return of my old battery was simple. My car works as good as the day I bought it new! I talked with other battery providers and Falcon Hybrid is the only way to go.

I installed the Gen 2 w g3 cells on Tuesday in our 2006 Toyota Prius - everything went well. When our car was new, we were averaging about 43-44 mpg, and over the last couple years it has been around 40. Since the Hybrid Battery was replaced, and after some initial adjustment, we're getting around 50+ mpg. My wife and I are thrilled. I'll be sure to pass your details along if I hear of anyone in need of a Prius battery. 041b061a72
